Amor towles rules of civility review6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But after an accident which leaves Eve in a precarious situation, Tinker, perhaps feeling guilty over his involvement, takes Evey in so that she can rehabilitate in luxury. Charming, dashing, full of wit and humor, he befriends Katie and Evey and the three of them pal around the city enjoying a lot of gin, and the memorable meals to go with it. It’s a fast crowd but not without some memorable finds. But when the work day is over, it’s Evey who takes Katie by the hand and the two find themselves living it up with drinks paid for by others. Katie is a working class girl, trying to make a name for herself in the publishing world. Her flirtatious nature and her knack for always knowing where the party is, attracts Katie who is slightly more down-to-earth and sensible. Eve, or Evey, is beautiful, vivacious and impossible to ignore. Nevertheless, I shall try.Īfter Eve accidently dumps a bowl of food into Katie’s lap, the two become fast friends. This is one of those stories that is so full of rich imagery and well-drawn characters that I doubt I can do it justice in summarizing it here. ![]() ![]() Her strict seclusion soon gives rise to gossip in the neighbouring village and she becomes a social outcast. Contrary to the early 19th century norms, she pursues an artist's career and makes an income by selling her pictures. The novel is framed as a series of letters from Gilbert Markham to his friend about the events connected with his meeting a mysterious young widow, calling herself Helen Graham, who arrives at Wildfell Hall, an Elizabethan mansion which has been empty for many years, with her young son and a servant. Probably the most shocking of the Brontës' novels, it had an instant and phenomenal success, but after Anne's death her sister Charlotte prevented its re-publication in England until 1854. It was first published in 1848 under the pseudonym Acton Bell. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the second and final novel written by English author Anne Brontë. A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman6/11/2023 ![]() He gives the first sales assistant an insinuating glance as if to say he'll pay him back for this. The colleague no longer looks quite as happy. Ove drills his police-flashlight finger into the counter. The colleague looks very happy, as people do when they have not been working for a sufficient stretch of time as sales assistants. The assistant gives him a quick nod, then disappears and comes back after a few moments with a colleague. ![]() Ove checks his watch and grudgingly agrees, reminding the assistant that some people have better things to do than stand around all day waiting. "You know what? Let me see if my colleague has finished with his customer, so he can come and give you a demonstration." Then he suddenly brightens, flashing an energetic smile. ![]() The sales assistant looks down at the counter in a way that seems to reveal a fiercely yet barely controlled desire to begin clawing his own face. ![]() "Is that one of those blessed 'eReaders' everyone's talking about?" "A McBook?" Ove says, far from convinced. ![]()

The watchmaker of filigree street plot6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The writing itself was fine, if not a little slow with slightly under-developed characters - though both elements picked up a lot in the last quarter or so. It was so often that it felt like it bordered on fetishizing - Thaniel was constantly thinking about how small Mori (and other Asian characters) was compared to him. ![]() It was written/referenced/implied constantly that Asian people are smaller than white people. I felt uncomfortable with some of the (probably period-appropriate) racism and East-Asian tokenizing that went unchallenged by the narrative. Thaniel felt very undeveloped until the end of the book. I really disliked Grace and the distasteful/bigoted things she’d say or think that went unchallenged by the narrative (weird anti-Asian stuff, being misogynistic towards suffragists). I liked the concept and I like Mori (the watchmaker) as a character. I’m not completely sure how I feel about this book. ![]()
